What yoga has taught me #1

Right now, I am at a crossroads in my life. I just moved to a new city and left my career behind. I wanted to use this time to reflect, reconnect, and deepen my yoga practice. I’ve been practicing yoga at home for the past year or so. I followed Yoga With Adrianne on Youtube (who was truly amazing) and I highly recommend her to anyone who wants to start practicing yoga. Her 30 minute videos were perfect for the “always on the go” lifestyle I was leading. With her, I learned the fundamentals of yoga. She taught me to “find what feels good”. To slow your mind and listen to what your body is telling you. Spoiler alert: much easier said than done.

Now, I am blessed to have the opportunity to practice everyday at a local studio. This has allowed me to strengthen my practice and journey deeper down the road of self-discovery.

Every week, I’d like to share one of those lessons with you.

Lesson #1: Value your breath.

Without the breath, there is no life. Literally, if we stop breathing, our bodies are no longer able to function. Although this may seem somewhat obvious, its something many of us forget. Think about while you are driving in the car. Wandering off in your thoughts or the music on the radio. Are you breathing? Sure, it’s an automatic function of the body. Yet still, we neglect it and pay this VITAL function no mind. I’m 100% guilty of this. For years, I’d catch myself holding my breath while I worked out. Although this only fatigued my body quicker, I still never took the time to consciously breath.

Let’s do something together. Close your eyes, bring your hands gently to your sides, then take a deep inhale through the nose. Hold it there at the top, counting down from five. Then let go out the exhale through your mouth and let it be audible. Leave your eyes closed for another 10 seconds or so. Simply observe how your body feels. All we did was one conscious deep breath, yet there is a notice difference in the way the body feels after. Imagine what will happen when you make a habit of this practice?

Learning to love, value, and respect the breath has been making such a positive impact on my life. I am constantly more relaxed, my mind has been clearer, and I have a sense of joy that I am unable to really explain.

I invite you to repeat this exercise multiple times a day and to start making an effort to breath deeply!

    Nice one 🙂 We use the headspace app, it’s really for meditating, but since we’re also guilty of not breathing properly, it urges us to do so at least for better sleep :))

  2. I love this! I’ll definitely be looking for Adrianne on Youtube. I really like Yoga but I’m so far unsuccessful at incorporating it into my daily routine. I’ll keep trying!

  3. There are so many variance in yoga – but I do meditate -I prefer TM or Vipassana

  4. This post has reminded me to bring in some discipline back to my life.
    I had reminded myself of breathing deeply when I went SCUBA but couldn’t keep up with my resolve. I’ll give it another shot.

  7. I loved your post and the fact that you give an exercise with it! I am a trained yoga teacher living in Bali and blessed that yoga is practiced everywhere here.
    One of the first misconception I see with new students is that asanas are the most important part of yoga, when the breath and pranayamas are actually the foundation to deepen your practice and being in peace with yourself.
    I really enjoyed following your exercise!
